This lesson draws from traditional Anishinaabe decision-making processes that considered the impact of choices on seven generations into the future. The Seven Grandfather Teaching of Wisdom (represented by the Beaver) emphasizes that true wisdom comes from careful observation, thoughtful analysis, and consideration of long-term consequences. Students learn that critical thinking in esports and life requires examining multiple perspectives, understanding cause-and-effect relationships, and making decisions that benefit not just immediate goals but future well-being.
Begin with a sharing circle: "Tell us about a time when you had to make a difficult decision in a game or in life." Introduce the Seven Generations teaching - how traditional Anishinaabe leaders considered how their decisions would affect children and community members seven generations in the future (approximately 140 years).
Share a teaching story about how Beaver demonstrates wisdom through careful observation and planning before taking action, building structures that benefit the whole ecosystem. Ask students: "What makes a decision 'good' or 'wise'?" "How can we think about the long-term effects of our choices?" Create an anchor chart with decision-making criteria that consider immediate and future impacts.
Present a complex strategic scenario from esports (team composition decisions, resource allocation, risk vs. safety choices) and guide students through traditional Anishinaabe decision-making processes:
Observe carefully: What information do we have? What are we not seeing?
Listen to all voices: What do different team members think? What perspectives are we missing?
Consider consequences: What might happen if we choose this path? How might it affect others?
Think seven generations: What are the long-term impacts of this decision?
Seek balance: How does this choice serve both individual and collective needs?
Model thinking aloud through each step, showing students how critical analysis involves questioning assumptions, examining evidence, and considering multiple outcomes. Connect this to Indigenous storytelling traditions where choices in stories teach about consequences and wisdom.
Students work in small groups to analyze complex decisions from esports matches, traditional stories, or current events. Each group receives a different scenario requiring critical analysis: strategic choices in competitive gaming, ethical dilemmas in esports (cheating, team conflicts, sponsorship decisions), or community decisions that affect gaming programs.
Using the five-step traditional decision-making process, groups analyze their scenarios and prepare presentations that include: key decision points identified, multiple perspectives considered, potential consequences analyzed, long-term impacts evaluated, and final recommendations with reasoning. Encourage students to create short stories explaining their analysis, connecting to Indigenous traditions of teaching through narrative.
Groups present their analyses to the class, with other students asking clarifying questions and offering additional perspectives. Emphasize that critical thinking is strengthened through community dialogue and collective wisdom.
Students provide one clear example of a decision that significantly impacted an outcome (in gaming, story, or real life) and analyze the decision-making process using traditional frameworks.
Use a rubric with 4 criteria:
Students complete reflection: "Good decision-making requires..." and "I can use these thinking skills when..."
Traditional Decision-Making Research: Study specific examples of traditional Anishinaabe governance and decision-making processes, analyzing how these approaches could inform modern community and organizational decisions.
Esports Leadership Analysis: Analyze decision-making by professional esports teams, coaches, and organizations, applying seven generations thinking to evaluate choices about player development, community building, and industry growth.
Community Decision-Making Participation: If appropriate, students can observe or participate in community meetings or band council sessions, practicing critical analysis of real community decisions.

Connect decision-making to cultural values and help students see how traditional teachings provide frameworks for modern challenges. If possible, invite Elders, Knowledge Keepers, or community members to share decision-making stories and wisdom. Be prepared to facilitate respectful dialogue when students have different perspectives on complex issues. Emphasize that critical thinking is a skill that improves with practice and community support.
