Project Based Learning
Mining practices, waste, material processing, accidents and disasters negatively affect us and our environment. Consider the effects on:
Our rivers, lakes and drinking water
The air we breathe
Agriculture, including farming of plants and animals
The food chain
Wildlife and species that are very sensitive to pollution
Our health
As a contributing factor of global warming
Upon completing their research, students should review the “Assessing the Social & Environmental Effects of Mining” companion Minecraft Education example world (30 minutes). This world will provide them with a framework of how to base their own project builds.
Students will create their own world in which they will:
Build a mine that accurately reflects the process for extracting the resource that is being extracted.
Demonstrate the effects of the process (pick 2), from the items shown in the Guiding Ideas section by building them in the Minecraft world.
Provide a solution for one of these negative effects, by constructing the solution in the Minecraft world.
Use slates, posters, boards, NPCs to describe the mining process, its effects and possible solutions.

Topic A: Rocks and Minerals
3–5 Demonstrate knowledge of materials that comprise Earth’s crust, and demonstrate skill in classifying these materials.
3–6 Use, safely, a variety of tools, techniques and materials in construction activities.
3–7 Construct structures, using a variety of materials and designs, and compare the effectiveness of the various materials and designs for their intended purposes.
Overall Expectations:
1. assess the social and environmental impacts of human uses of rocks and minerals;
2. investigate, test, and compare the physical properties of rocks and minerals;
3. demonstrate an understanding of the physical properties of rocks and minerals.
Specific Expectations:
1.1 assess the social and environmental costs and benefits of using objects in the built environment that are made from rocks and minerals
1.2 analyze the impact on society and the environment of extracting and refining rocks and minerals for human use, taking different perspectives into account
2.2 use a variety of tests to identify the physical properties of minerals
2.3 use a variety of criteria (e.g., colour, texture, lustre) to classify common rocks and minerals according to their characteristics
2.4 use scientific inquiry/research skills (see page 15) to investigate how rocks and minerals are used, recycled, and disposed of in everyday life
3.1 describe the difference between rocks (composed of two or more minerals) and minerals (composed of the same substance throughout), and explain how these differences determine how they are used
3.2 describe the properties (e.g., colour, lustre, streak, transparency, hardness) that are used to identify minerals
3.3 describe how igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are formed
3.4 describe the characteristics of the three classes of rocks and explain how their characteristics are related to their origin
Earth and Space Science: Rocks, Minerals, and Erosion
Outcomes:
RM4.1 - Investigate physical properties of rocks and minerals, including those found in the local environment.
RM4.2- Assess how human uses of rocks and minerals impact self, society, and the environment.
RM4.3- Analyze how weathering, erosion, and fossils provide evidence to support human understanding of the formation of landforms on Earth.
Earth and Space Science: Earth's Crust and Resources
Outcomes:
EC7.1 - Analyze societal and environmental impacts of historical and current catastrophic geological events, and scientific understanding of movements and forces within Earth's crust. (SI)
EC7.2 - Identify locations and processes used to extract Earth's geological resources and examine the impacts of those locations and processes on society and the environment. (SI, DM, CP)
EC7.3 - Investigate the characteristics and formation of the surface geology of Saskatchewan, including soil, and identify correlations between surface geology and past, present, and possible future land uses. (DM, SI)
