In this lesson, students will learn that Blocklympics is a one-to-five-hour creative introduction to the design of an inclusive, competitive, and fun Olympic games-style event. Students will be challenged with making their games come to life through the creation of inclusive venues, living spaces, and a mascot in the middle of the Athlete’s Village.

The biomes are sending their best craftletes to the Blocklympic and Parablocklympic Games! There’s one problem, nothing is ready!
Your students are tasked with planning, building, and explaining / demonstrating much of the Games’ essential sites. Students will spawn in the local host village for the Games. They will speak with the locals who are very proud to be hosting such a prestigious event and are in the mood to share some great advice. Student groups should divide the many tasks and form smaller build teams, when possible, to accomplish all tasks in the time allotted. Once all the required zones have been created to the best of their ability, students will create a video detailing build theme, inclusive considerations, interiors, exteriors, advanced Minecraft features, and demonstrations when relevant.

Review curriculum connections if applicable
Spawn into the local host village for this year’s Blocklympics/Parablocklympics and meet the people who are proud to host the Games. They will share their passion for the Games and give some insightful tips that you can incorporate into your experience.
In the center of all the action is a circular spot for the official Games Monument which will double as the ceremonial torch. Students will create a 3D monument with a torch top. The monument should represent some element of the Games and the torch fire of course represents the life of the Games.
Create a fun outdoor game, sport, or challenge that requires team or individual competition. Place signs that describe the rules and how a winner is determined. If possible create it so it can be used in both Blocklympics and Parablocklympics.
One side of the medal is to represent excellence in the Blocklympics while the other side is for the Parablocklympics. Students should try to incorporate symbolism for excellence and maybe a few Minecraft biomes.
A stadium fit for the opening and closing ceremonies needs to be built. It can include space for a Blocklympic/Parablocklympic event but really should have lights, colours, and space to celebrate the games for spectators and craftletes.
Students can build a modern and artistic village for the craftletes to rest and relax. Consider accessibility and inclusive features as well as extracurricular fun for the craftletes.
Students will:
Design the medals for the Blocklympic and Parablocklympic Games.
Design the accessible living quarters and street environment for the craftletes coming to the Games from all the biomes.
Build the inclusive arena/stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies and one key event.
Craft the central ceremonial monument and torch combination for this year’s Games.
Craft an original or replica Blocklympic / Parablocklympic event in Minecraft with clear rules and winners.
