In this lesson, students will explore how we can achieve sustainable lifestyles. They will also apply knowledge and understanding by building a sustainable place to live that represents new and innovative thinking on sustainable lifestyles.

The minimum guided learning time for this learning activity is 60 min + time taken to complete. It would be advisable to complete the challenge over one or more lessons. The activities may be divided across lessons. These are marked, so that a class may be divided into these sections.
If you want to go straight to the Minecraft activity, you can jump straight to Activity 6.
In this activity learners will learn about sustainable development.
Teachers should watch this video before introducing to the class. This video is suited for all ages.

Classroom Discussion (8 min)
Ask students to work in groups and discuss the following questions.
What are the UN Sustainable Development Goals?
Why does the world need these goals?
Feedback (3 min)
Encourage groups to feedback the answer to the questions and listen to each other. Correct any miss concepts of the goals or replay the video if required.
Your class group now have learned about sustainable development, the issues facing our planet and have discussed possible solutions. They have been given some ideas for sustainable living and the community and had opportunity to think about how this will might be represented in Minecraft.
Remind the class of the build challenge prompt:
Today’s world is facing serious global emergencies due to climate change. Global warming, biodiversity loss, and pollution are a few of several human-caused emergencies. These are closely interconnected and put the well-being of current and future generations at unacceptable risk. Together we can make 2021 a turning point for our planet and transform our relationship with nature.
The global community, through the United Nations, is trying to respond to these pressing challenges in a collective manner through the Sustainable Development Goals. Drawing from these Goals and using Minecraft: Education Edition, build a solution for your community that shows how we can change unsustainable behaviours for ways of living in harmony with nature.
You can encourage students to research information about sustainable living, sustainable communities and the sustainable development goals. The class can now divide them into teams to start working together through the Minecraft world ‘Peace with Nature’. This world requires a licensed version of Minecraft: Education Edition and the world downloaded to the devices.
You are now ready to submit your entry for the Global Build Challenge
Each team must record a short game recording of their finished build and provide a short description in the Global Build Challenge Submission Form.
Students under 18 will need a parent, guardian, or educator to submit their world.
This section sets out the assessment rubric for the Global Build Challenge.
Minecraft appointed assessors and UNESCO staff will judge competition entries using the competition rubric. The decision of the judging panel is final and there is no appeal.
The learning objectives of the Global Build Challenge are:
