Tic-Tac-Toe Game

In this lesson, students need to analyze the construction of 'Tic-Tac-Toe Game' and make their own design in XCS. It will include some pieces with different motifs, a 3*3 boards with grid lines. In this project, students need to explore and control some functions related to graphic sequences, and knowledge about laser engraving and cutting learned in the previous courses, such as parameter setting.

In this lesson, students need to analyze the construction of 'Tic-Tac-Toe Game' and make their own design in XCS. It will include some pieces with different motifs, a 3*3 boards with grid lines. Introduction

Introduction

This lesson can be started with some classical or popular board game discussion. Students can talk about which is their favourite game and what beautiful memories they have when they play these games, then try to analyze what these games consist of. Can students make these games by using P2 and laser processing materials? Do they like the Tic-Tac-Toe Game? Who do they play with, and so on. Encourage them to be excited about designing their own Tic-Tac-Toe Games.

In this part, students will explore some graphics processing functions including 'graphics's align, arrange and reflect', auto-snapping in settings. Get to know the meaning of these functions and understand why they are helpful in making laser projects. Preparing for Section 3.

Step 1: As we can see, in the Tic-Tac-Toe game, we need to engrave at least 10 pawns, 5:5. Due to the limited size and quantity of available materials. It will be better to minimize the waste of material, which means we need to order the pawns to save as much material as possible.

Step 2: So, after copying out the 5 pieces, try to arrange them by using the functions in 'align', clicking on each option and seeing what happens to these 5 pawns. 

Typically, we use 'Align Top' first, then drag the rightmost graphic a distance and use 'Distribute horizontally' so that the spacing between them is even.

Step 3: Because we insert the fake frame here, maybe you already found that we can't select the pawns in the fake frame. 

So how can we solve this problem? 

Try to move the frame first, and choose all the pawns, click the 'Arrange' button, to test every option. Choose the 'Bring forward' option, then move back the frame and check if you can choose the pawns in the frame or not.

Step 4: Now let's see 'Reflect'. This function is useful when you want to flip a non-centrosymmetric figure left or right/up or down.

Step 5: Also, there is a convenient way to line up these graphics easily and casually. Find 'Settings' on the left corner and turn on the 'Auto-snapping' function. 

After closing this window, when you move one graphic, you can see a blue reference line to help us line up this graphic with its neighbours.

Design & Create

Design & Create

Students will start to design their own Tic-Tac-Toe game in this session. In the making process, control the usage and implications of 'Smart Fill' and the 'Combine' function in batch engraving.

Step 1: Now let's start to design this game's sketch. First of all, we need to design the game board with laser engraving. As we can see, the game board of Tic-Tac-Toe Game consists of four lines, two parallels at the top and bottom, and two parallels at the left and right, so let's try to draw these four lines first. 

We set the whole game board to 8.268 inch*8.268 inch in the sample sketch. So we can set these lines at 6.77 inches to ensure they will not be beyond the game board.

Step 2: Now we have these four lines. Let's put them in the fake frame to make them even. Here we have a small trick called 'group'. 

First of all, let's choose two parallels at the top and bottom and make them 'Align left'. Then select them all and 'group', 'Arrange' them 'Bring forward'. Put them in the fake frame and select them all and 'Align' them 'Vertical align center'  to make sure these two parallels are in the middle of this game board. 

Try to line up the left two parallels at the left and right in the same way. Or maybe you can use the blue reference line after 'Group' and 'Bring forward'.

Step 3: When we finish this game board design, let's move forward to pawns' sketch. Choose two different graphics and line them up in two different colors' plywood. Setting the laser cut parameters as we used before. You will get 10 pawns quickly. 

Tips: Suggested size for the pawns’ is 1.57 inches.

Step 4: To make these pawns more interesting, we can put different images on them. Here we can put 5 pawns in P2 and insert an image you like, such as a pig. 

Now let's fresh the camera, put this pig on one pawn, then click 'Smart fill' on the top bar to see what will happen.

Step 5: Next we need to engrave these images on pawns. Every image is independent in XCS, so the laser beam will engrave them one by one, it will take a long time. Since we already know the function named 'Combine', let's try to combine these images together to make them a whole piece. Then start to engrave, see what the laser engrave path will be, if it can save some time for us.

In this session, students will show their laser works and share their creations. Teachers might ask some questions like 'Do you think it is fun to make a game all by yourself? In the making process, do you have any challenges and how do you solve them? Which part is the most difficult for you? Which part is your favourite?'  

Encourage students to play their Tic-Tac-Toe games with their classmates and discuss the differences between their laser work and classmates. After this lesson, what other games or tools would they like to make with P2 and XCS? What types of other materials could students utilize for these wooden games?
