About This Event

Kick off your Data Dunkers journey by discovering how basketball analytics can be used to build data literacy, critical thinking, and student engagement across a variety of learning environments. In this combined introductory session, educators will gain a comprehensive overview of the Data Dunkers program while exploring the hands-on activities that bring data to life for students.
Participants will be introduced to the program's vision, learning outcomes, and instructional approach before diving into the collection of interactive lessons and investigations that make Data Dunkers a unique sports analytics experience. Through guided exploration, educators will examine how students develop skills in data collection, analysis, visualization, and evidence-based decision-making while connecting learning to a topic many students already love—basketball.
This session is designed to help educators build confidence with the program resources, understand the student experience, and prepare for successful implementation in their classrooms, clubs, or enrichment programs.

During this session, educators will:

  • Explore the goals, structure, and learning progression of the Data Dunkers program.

  • Experience key student activities and challenges from the curriculum.

  • Examine how basketball analytics can be used to teach data literacy and inquiry skills.

  • Learn strategies for facilitating engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

  • Discover opportunities to integrate mathematics, STEM, technology, and critical-thinking outcomes.

  • Review program resources, instructional supports, and implementation tips.

  • Identify ways to differentiate activities to meet the needs of diverse learners.

By the end of this session, educators will have a clear understanding of the Data Dunkers learning experience, the activities students will complete, and the instructional strategies needed to facilitate meaningful learning. Participants will leave prepared to launch the program and inspire students to explore the power of data through the exciting world of basketball analytics.
Note: This session will follow Module 1: Welcome to Data Dunkers and Module 2: Exploring the Activities from the Canvas Course.
