Part 1 – Welcome to Data Dunkers – From Basketball Stats to Data Stories (Student Co-taught – Grades 5-12)
Virtual Live Co-Taught
About This Event
Ready to discover how basketball and data work together? Students will be introduced to the exciting world of sports analytics while building foundational data literacy skills through interactive, hands-on challenges. Students will explore how professional teams use data to make decisions, improve performance, and gain a competitive advantage. Through engaging activities and real basketball statistics, participants will learn how to collect, organize, interpret, and communicate data while investigating questions that matter. As they work through a variety of collaborative tasks and activities, students will begin thinking like data analysts—using evidence to support their ideas, uncover patterns, and solve meaningful problems.
During this workshop, students will:
Explore the world of basketball analytics and data science.
Learn how data is collected, organized, and used to answer questions.
Participate in hands-on activities that bring data to life.
Investigate player and team statistics to identify trends and patterns.
Practice interpreting charts, graphs, and visual representations of data.
Collaborate with peers to solve challenges and share discoveries.
Develop critical thinking and evidence-based decision-making skills.
By the end of these modules, students will understand how data can be used to answer questions, make informed decisions, and create meaningful insights. They will be familiar with the Data Dunkers experience, confident in using basic data analysis skills, and ready to dive deeper into future investigations and challenges.
Note: This session will follow Module 1: Welcome to Data Dunkers and Module 2: Exploring the Activities from the Canvas Course.
