Python: Text & Numbers

In this lesson, students are introduced to the fundamental data types in Python used to store and manage data, including Strings, Integers, and Floating-Point Numbers. Students will explore how the Python editor reads the input data and converts the data into different data types. This is known as Type Casting. Students will also learn how to use the ‘type()’ function to identify the data type of the input information and data.

In this lesson, students will explore how to calculate the area of a triangle in Python by using the Heron’s formula. Students will utilize the Python knowledge they have learnt in the previous learning activities to handle this geometric problem. This lesson will also introduce variables in Python, as well as the good practice of writing comments while writing Python code.

Python: Body Mass Index Calculator

In this lesson, students will be introduced to if statements in Python through a BMI Calculator application. The if statement is used to assess information and choose one course of action or another for decision making. This construct processes conditional execution of a statement or a group of statements according to the value of an expression. Students will learn about conditional algorithms and develop a BMI Calculator to assess their weight status.

Python: Buy Low, Sell High

In this lesson, students are introduced to the if…else and if…elif…else statements in Python for multi-way decision making. Both statements can execute the code inside the body of the if/elif when certain conditions are met. Code inside the body of else will be executed if neither of the condition is met. To explore conditional constructs, students will develop a computational model to simulate the commodity trading and practice the ‘buy low, sell high’ strategy.

In this lesson, students are introduced to loops in Python through the Loan Payment Calculator application. The for loop is used to repeat an action or sequence a specified number of times. Take the even principal payment as an example, students will explore how to use the for loop to help calculate the repayments of a loan in the even principal payment schedule.

Python: Toss a Coin

In this lesson, students will explore the coin tossing probabilities. Students will create a computational model to simulate a coin-tossing experiment to calculate the chance of the coin landing on heads or tails. To model the true randomness of tossing a coin in the virtual environment, students need to create a list of random binary digits, 0 and 1. Students will also combine the conditional statements and for loops to conduct the random experiment.

Python: Guess the Number

In this lesson, students are introduced to the while loop in Python through another classic probability experiment. Students will explore how to calculate the probability of guessing a selected number from a list of random integers by using the while loop. To maximize the probability of guessing the correct number, students will address the uniform distribution problems and use the computational model to decrease the probability distribution.

In this lesson, students will explore the probability problem of two dice rolling together. Students will create a simulation, calculate the sum of the numbers of two dice each round and the probability of certain results. Students will learn how to create lists to store and read data as well as execute some of the commonly used functions in the random module during this probability experiment.

In this lesson, students will explore the use of functions in Python. Students will use the function to create a computational model on the ball selection probability. Students will then create a ‘ball drawing’ function and define how it should work to simulate the ball selection. Students also need to recall and utilize what they have learned about lists to store and modify data.

In this lesson, students will consolidate their previous knowledge and skills in coding and reflect upon the use of Python in a range of situations. This lesson will provide a set of Python programming tasks about Python data types, variables and lists, control structures, operations, expressions and functions. Classroom activities can take the form of individual or small group activities - depending on the classroom setup. This lesson also includes a capstone project for students to complete.
